At the Powderhorn Chateau we have a small experienced team who work year round. During our high season (June – October) our staff force increases from approximately 15 to 50+. We employ seasonal staff to fill positions in Management, Food and Beverage (front of house and chefs) and Housekeeping.

We are family owned and operated. We look for experienced staff that will show initiative, have outstanding service skills, work fast and efficiently, perform well under pressure and fit into a sociable team. We are committed to providing high levels of service to our clientele who include both domestic and international visitors. Position Vacant: Duty Manager

We are looking for a duty manager to join our team!

We are based right at the base of the Tongariro National Heritage Park and we are also the closest accommodation, bar and restaurant to the Turoa ski field. With a range of activities to do both summer and winter why would you need to be anywhere else?

The Duty Manager will strengthen our management team and help train and develop our staff further to ensure that our high standards are maintained and where possible improved. 

The successful applicant will have to meet the following criteria:

  • Have a minimum of 2 years hospitality managerial experience in a high quality venue
  • Must obtain a NZ Managers cert within 60days of starting employment
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • A personable managerial style with strong people skills
  • Strong food, cocktail and wine knowledge
  • Cash up knowledge
  • Have the experience and maturity to deal with late night party situations.
  • Be able to make fast paced decisions to ensure the safety of all patrons and staff.
  • Available to work days and nights both during the week and weekends.
  • Be self motivated and hungry to succeed with a positive attitude.
  • Impeccable personal presentation
  • A strong command of the English language, both verbal and written.

Position Vacant: Chef de Partie

We are currently seeking experienced an experienced Chef de Partie to work at the iconic Powderhorn Chateau in Ohakune.

We are on the look out for hard working and dedicated team players. There will also be plenty of opportunity to experience what the mountain has to offer whether it’s skiing or snowboarding. If you enjoy working in a fast paced professional kitchen to produce a consistently high standard of food through preparation and service we want to hear from you. This is the perfect role for passionate Chefs who love a challenge and are real team players.

We can provide minimum 30 hours per week at a pay rate of $27.80 minimum.

As the Ideal Candidate for this role some qualities we seek include:

  • Experience in higher end and high volume a la Carte settings
  • 2 years minimum experience in a similar role
  • A proven understanding of kitchen hygiene and safety principles
  • Good communication skills in a busy kitchen environment and the ability to handle pressure in a calm professional manner.

Position Vacant: Restaurant Manager

The Powderhorn Chateau has two onsite restaurants which host A la Carte dining, weddings, conferences and functions. Our Food and Beverage Manager is looking for a right hand man or lady to help with the running of this large venue. 
We are based right at the base of the Tongariro National Heritage Park and we are also the closest accommodation, bar and restaurant to the Turoa ski field. With a range of activities to do both summer and winter why would you need to be anywhere else?

Job tasks and responsibilities
– Working alongside the Food and Beverage Manager to make sure all staff training and service are kept up to a 4 star standard to be inline with the hotel’s Qualmark rating.
– Running of the restaurant during shifts, including allocations of staff, dealing with complaints and greeting and seating guests.
– Cash counting and cash ups to be inline with the hotels procedures and all monies to be accounted for at the end of every evening.
– Liaise with the chef in planning and pricing of menus and organising events.
– Assess staffing requirements, handle recruitment, training and orientation of new staff.
– Carry out staff appraisals.
– Ordering of stock to make sure PAR levels are maintained at all times.
– Carrying out monthly stocktakes.
– Ensure staff are aware of their obligations pursuant to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
– To continually work within the parameters of efficient wage costs.
– Allocate meal breaks, enforce Powderhorn Procedures and Staff Rules, including uniforms. Conduct staff disciplinary action when required and monitor staff morale.
– Ensure that health and safety practices and procedures are followed at all times.
– Use initiative to reallocate staff positions between the hotel department should the need arise.

Skills and experience
– This position requires at least 3 years in hospitality, experience in a 4 star environment, waitressing, bartending and other departments is preferred to create a better knowledge of how a restaurant is run.
– Experience in managing the service and sale of alcohol.
– Will need to obtain NZ duty managers certificate within 90 days of starting employment.
– Some experience as a supervisor in hospitality is not essential but is favoured.
– Must be flexible to work days, nights and weekends.

We can provide a minimum of 30 hours at a rate between $26.00 – $30.00 depending on skillset.

About the role – 
An eagerness to learn and take on new challenges is essential. The role consists of working on the front desk, interaction with guests and meeting their needs to a 5 star level. This is a job share role so good communication and teamwork is required.
– Take phone and email bookings for the hotel, taking deposits and completing reservations from beginning to end.
– Welcoming guests from all over the world to our beautiful town.
– Checking in and checking out guests to a very high standard.
– Helping handle the organisation of functions and events within the hotel, onsite bar restaurant and function facilities.
– Responsible for daily banking and balancing spreadsheets.
– Enjoys working with a diverse and interesting team.
